-SPRING GREEN-

Daniel Malony, formerly of the no-wave-revival band Miscomings, debuts, under his new artist moniker, with a work that possibly draws inspiration from Steven Stapleton’s work as Nurse with Wound but also possibly from the deepest cracks in your shoe soles, from the dirty crawl spaces in abandoned basements. a robust personal mythology is a harrowing yet tasteful collection of tape loops and field recordings that aims to be gleefully repulsive and, for the most part, succeeds. There’s no jump scare moments here (blessedly), but the album boldly careens around nightmare visions and nauseating sonics at a creeping pace, pausing occasionally to ruminate on more minimal accompaniment (“orpulence”). There are moments like the ultra-high frequencies in the 12-minute epic “screap” that hinge on the side of unbearable, but in that sense the album should be duly credited for inventively shirking convention. If you’re willing and able to submit yourself to this brand of aural abuse, mythology is a vivid trip into hell that has the potential to upend your idea of noise collage.

Recommended for office parties and high school pep rallies.
