#14: The Scars Remain: The Legacy of Cambodian Rock N’ Roll (feat. Alex Benson)

And we’re back with your regularly scheduled programming!! Today on the podcast we’ve got Alex Benson (from the excellent local zine Loop and Replay) talking about one of the most devastating blows to artistic expression in the 20th century: the rise (and fall) of the Cambodian rock n’ roll movement. As Phnom Penh was transformed into a musical utopia in the 60’s and early 70’s, the communist Khmer Rouge ordered a mass exodus that resulted in nearly of quarter of the country’s population (including most of its artists) being sent to their deaths. How did a once fertile country change so rapidly? And how much has Cambodian culture recovered since? Tune in and find
